Union appreciated: The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 697 was recently presented a Community Spirit award from Lake Area United Way for the union’s support during the United Way’s annual community campaign. Lou Martinez, president of Lake Area United Way, said the contribution from IBEW Local 687 increased by $10,000 over the prior year’s campaign, an increase of more than 33 percent.

Donations enhance security: Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County recently received a $4,000 grant from the Valparaiso Rotary Club and a $4,000 matching gift from Task Force Tips to purchase and install a new video surveillance system for the Boys & Girls Clubs’ Valparaiso Unit.

‘The Big Sell’: Entrepreneurs who want to test their start-up business idea can do so by entering The Big Sell Entrepreneurs in Action competition, scheduled for March 23. The contest, sponsored by the Purdue University Calumet Center for Entrepreneurship, provides the opportunity for 50 entrepreneurs to pitch their idea to audience members and a panel of judges with the chance to win cash prizes and services. Prospective competitors can apply at www.thebigsell.org until March 1.
