February 20, 2013 4:22PM
Happy 50th birthday to Janet Snedecor: On Feb. 8, a surprise party hosted by her family Ryan (Brienne), Brianna (Joseph), Brooke, Mayor Brian Snedecor, and the belle of the ball, granddaughter Jaycee, actually had Janet speechless.
Family, friends, coworkers and school friends were on hand to celebrate as she entered a new decade.
Cheers to 50 more great years, Janet!
“Dancing with the Local Stars”: Mayor Snedecor is putting on his dancing shoes in support of the Lake Area United Way. “Dancing with the Local Stars” is a fun-filled, friendly competition that is part of the 2013 Indiana Challenge ballroom dance competition being held at the Star Plaza Theatre Feb. 21-24.
Caroline Hamilton of Arthur Murray Dance Studio of Merrillville has been training Mayor Snedecor to compete amongst other local celebrities.
Tickets to the event, scheduled from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, can be purchased at the door. They are $20 for adults and $10 for children 17 and younger, and are good for all of the evening’s activities.
Sharon Terry, senior program director at the Hobart YMCA, was one of the first people to reach out to me with some great projects she’s organizing for our city through the Hobart YMCA and Hobart Kiwanis.
“Y” members, class participants and community friends are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items throughout February and place them in one of the collection boxes marked “Love is Sharing” at the YMCA, 601 W. 40th Place. This annual food drive aids the Hobart Food Pantry.
All food items collected will be delivered by March 4 to the pantry.
Also, scholarships will be awarded to students residing within the municipal boundaries of Hobart and Lake Station. First consideration will be given to applicants from Hobart, River Forest and Edison high schools who are seeking further education through an accredited college or technical school.
The awarding of these scholarships will be based on citizenship, leadership, community service, academics and future goals. Applicants must meet entrance requirements for the chosen school.
Interested applicants can obtain an application through their guidance counselor’s office, at the Hobart YMCA or by contacting Sharon Tarry, Hobart Kiwanis Club, 601 W. 40th Place, Hobart, IN 46342.
Completed applications must be received by April 19.
Fourth of July Parade: It’s only February, but plans are being made for Hobart’s biggest celebration, the July Fourth parade. The theme is “Celebrating the Hobart Family.”
Grand marshals for this year’s parade will be the Tom and Rosemarie Ehrhardt family, including their daughters, son, spouses and grandchildren.
Families are encouraged to participate in the parade or submit photos to the Hobart Chamber of Commerce for use in the fourth festivities program book. Call Mike Adams, 942-5774, for more information.
Keep sending me your news to email@example.com or leave me a message at 942-4511. I look forward to hearing from you!
