Free tax preparation: The United Way of Porter County, 951 Eastport Center Drive, is offering free state and federal income tax preparation for 2011 for those who qualify. Qualifications include an adjusted gross income of $50,000 or less including low to moderate taxpayers and the elderly. Tax preparations are by appointment from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays (Feb. 18, March 3, 17 and 31, April 7 and 14). Scholastic Book Fair: The Scholastic Book Fair to benefit the YMCA preschool program is being held Monday, Feb. 6, through Thursday, Feb. 9, at the Portage Township YMCA, 3100 Willowcreek Road. Hours are: 9 a.m. to noon and 3 to 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, and Wednesday, Feb. 8; 9 a.m. to noon and 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7; and 9 a.m. to noon and 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9.
