We all know how beneficial exercise is, regardless of age. But, for some, that becomes problematic because of health, joint or mobility problems.
One of the great equalizers when it comes to exercise is water and its buoyancy.
South Holland Parks has scheduled a new session of its aqua jogger deep-water workout from 7 to 7:50 p.m. starting March 27 for Tuesday classes or March 29 for Thursday sessions.
Get a great workout without your feet ever touching the bottom of the pool by using the special water belts (provided). While easy on your joints, you’ll burn calories and tone muscles in no time.
Obviously, you should be able to swim and be comfortable in at least shoulder-deep water.
As always, consult your doctor before starting any exercise program.
The nine-week class, open to ages 18 and older, is at the South Holland Community Center, 501 E. 170th St. The cost is $34 for fitness members, $39 for South Holland residents or $44 for nonresidents.
Call (708) 331-2940 to register.
† Technology may advance faster than the speed of light, but here’s a fact proven by generations of children: Kids like to build things with their hands, and the long shelf life of Lego building blocks is proof positive.
The Crown Point Parks Department welcomes ages 7 to 12 to join its Lego Club. The group meets from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on scheduled Mondays at the Crown Point Civic Center, 101 S. East St.
The cost is $10 for residents per class or $15 for nonresidents. The next meeting is Monday, Feb. 27. For more information or to register, call (219) 661-2271.
† Basketball comes to the forefront with the approach of March Madness and the promise of warmer weather. If your child is just learning the sport, the Dolton Park District has a program that will help get him or her off on the right foot.
Fundamentals of basketball will meet from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays and 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays starting Feb. 27. Ages 7 to 12 will learn the basics of dribbling, passing, and shooting.
An added benefit comes with the discipline of learning a sport, which will teach teamwork and build confidence.
This six-week on-court program will meet at the Shaw Recreation Center, 715 Engle St. To register, call (708) 201-2482 or go online to doltonparkdistrict.org.
† Your local parks are for all ages, even little, rambunctious boys, ages 3-5. And what little boy doesn’t have dreams of becoming a superhero?
Dyer Parks and Recreation is hosting a Shazam! Superhero party from 10 to 11 a.m., Monday, March 12, at the Town Hall, One Town Square.
A wide selection of costumes will allow your little guy to transform into the superhero of his choice. Add in games, activities, a fake tattoo or two and a roomful of new friends, and you can guarantee a morning he won’t soon forget.
Fees are $15 for Dyer residents or $20 for nonresidents. Register at the Town Hall or online at townofdyer.com/parks.
