I’ve never made it a secret that Halloween is perhaps my favorite holiday. From a time as far back as I can remember, I’ve loved it all: the decorations, costumes and makeup, trick-or-treating after dark and, of course, the candy. Oddly, the thrill for me was not in the eating of the sweets — I usually had enough after a piece or two — but rather in the harvesting. Seriously, I think I was a Halloween candy hoarder.

In retrospect, I believe what attracted me to Oct. 31 is the creativity. We’re invited to move out of the ordinary and step into a persona limited only by our imaginations. No wonder the holiday has climbed to second in popularity, right after Christmas!

So, in keeping with the spirit of Halloween, if you could step into the identity of anyone — living or dead — for an evening, who would you choose?

Susan Grozenski, Munster

My German shepherd. Seriously, I would like to see the world through his eyes. That dog is so smart that it’s sometimes scary. And, did I mention the arrogant attitude? My husband often likes to dance around the house — trust me, he can’t dance — and Harley just lays there and watches with this look that I’m never quite sure means, “Stop it or I’ll eat your face,” or “Mister, you’re an idiot.”

Fiona Wallace, Highland

I’d like to be Lady Guenevere from Camelot. What a dilemma! Would I pick the powerful, visionary king or the handsome and exciting Lancelot? It was such heartbreakingly romantic story and how fun to have two men fighting for my favor, if only for a few hours. Actually, I did go to a Halloween party once as Guenevere. I dressed my husband up in a faux suit of armor. Needless to say, he was not a happy camper because it involved wearing tights and not sitting down all night.

Joe Krueger, Merrillville

Prince William. Definitely, Prince William. Palaces, servants and great cars are one thing but one evening with Kate Middleton would simply blow me away. What a gorgeous woman! Oh yeah, I think I would look good in that red uniform, too.

Hal Cordeau, Merrillville

I’d like to be the late Steve Jobs, just to see what it feels like to have that much creativity and imagination. I was probably in the first generation of personal computer users and fell in love with MACs about 10 years ago. The world lost a genius when Jobs died. I would like to know where he would have led the computer world in the future.

Carol Evankovich, Schererville

Martha Stewart. For just a few minutes in my life, I would like to be Martha Stewart and make those cute little crafts or bake a fully decorated cake. Just once.

Barney Heintz, Dyer

I would like to step into the identity of one of our members of Congress to see if it’s true. Are they really brainless? Democrat or Republican? It doesn’t matter. I believe when it comes to stupidity, government leaders are equal opportunity employers.
