Dear Mr. Bradshaw,
I am applying to study at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., and the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. Do you have any advice about how I should go about putting together my application? I play the trumpet and have hopes of becoming a professional musician.
Both the Eastman and the Jacobs schools of music are competitive and require the applicant to provide extensive information about their academic and musical background that reaches far beyond the normal material that a student must provide for a general college admissions application.
It is best to start planning early by visiting the website for each school and reviewing their requirements.
The application for undergraduate admission to Eastman is scheduled to open Sept. 1. The program is currently under revision so it is advisable to check for any changes before you apply.
Depending upon the program of study a pre-screening recording may be required before a live audition date can be assigned.
The deadline for applying is Dec. 1, but students are strongly encouraged to apply for the Nov. 1 priority deadline.
Eastman does not require SAT or ACT test scores, but will review them if submitted. Indiana requires SAT or ACT scores to be reported with the application.
In preparation for answering your question, I called Eastman several times for clarification on whether applicants need to submit pre-screening recordings when applying.
Applicants to majors in Composition, Jazz Studies & Contemporary Media, Theory, Piano Performance, Cello, Clarinet, Flute, Percussion, Saxophone, Violin or Voice are pre-screened. These applicants must submit preliminary materials for review by the faculty.
If you major in trumpet for classical music you do not have to be pre-screened before being invited to audition.
To contact Eastman for further information, phone (585) 274-1060 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
At the Jacobs School all trumpet majors must audition. Call (812) 855-7998 or email email@example.com for a schedule.
Undergraduate applicants must apply by Nov. 1 and graduate applicants must apply by Dec. 1 in order to be considered for fall admission.
Applicants who wish to be considered for admission at Indiana University and the Jacobs School of Music must apply by the deadlines established, submit all required supplementary information and complete an audition or interview.
Preparing an application for either school is a test in patience and follow-through.
You will be happy to know that I received courteous and helpful advice from both schools when I called.
