Don’t forget, the Urban League of Northwest Indiana is hosting its second annual “Ministers in Concert” at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at the First African Methodist Episcopal Church, 2045 Massachusetts St.
The free, nondenominational event also is a fundraiser. Proceeds benefit the Urban League of Northwest Indiana’s advocacy and outreach services for residents of Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties. For more information, contact the Urban League at 887-9621 or visit www.urbanleagueofnwi.org.
Saturday, Dec. 1, is World AIDS Day. This year’s theme is “Getting to Zero.” Please be informed about HIV/AIDS and by all means, get tested.Check your local health department, health agencies, etc. to set up an appointment.
HIV/AIDS is still a major issue, especially in the African-American community. It is time to get real and be realistic with your relationships. Visit www.hivtest.cdc.gov. for national HIV and STD testing resources.
Festival of Song
The Wirt-Emerson Visual and Performing Arts High Ability Academy’s middle and high school vocal departments will present their annual Festival of Song concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at the First Baptist Church, 626 W. 21st Ave. As always, the concert is free as a holiday gift to the community. I strongly advise you arrive early to get a good seat. This annual Festival of Song is always a treat as some of the most beautiful young voices from Gary and Northwest Indiana sing traditional holiday songs and hymns.
Sojourner Truth House, 410 W. 13th Ave., is in need of warm socks, winter clothing and food for the winter season. Sojourner Truth House tended to 1,700 clients in January and expects to see more clients as winter approaches. But what they definitely need, as posted on their website, are plenty of warm clothes, especially fresh, clean pairs of warm socks. Sojourner Truth House is open from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, or call 885-2282.
