Holy Angels Cathedral, 640 Tyler St. in Gary, is hosting its sixth annual tribute to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, with performances by the Wirt-Emerson Visual and Performing Arts Academy Concert Choir. Admission is free.

† Seating is still available for the Gary Chamber of Commerce luncheon at noon Monday, Jan. 14, 411 E. 5th Ave. Guest speaker is Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson.

Admission is $17 in advance, $20 at the door. Call the Gary Chamber of Commerce, 885-7407, to reserve a seat or for more information.

† There’s still time to purchase tickets to see the Harlem Globetrotters at 7 p.m. Jan. 23 at the Genesis Convention Center, 5th Avenue and Broadway.

You’ll see the legendary Harlem Globetrotters do their thing, along with Freeman-Wilson … that is, if you, the citizens of Gary and Northwest Indiana, meet the goal of filling 5,000 seats at the center.

Freeman-Wilson said she will suit up and play against the Globetrotters that night if the goal is met. The mayor is a former Lady Panther basketball player from Roosevelt High School and she has some skills on the court.

General admission is $12 for upper level seating, $20 for lower level seating, $25 for V.I.P. and $50 for courtside.

To buy tickets, visit www.ticketweb.com or call (866) 468-3401. If you buy tickets online, please select the region Indiana (No Daylight Savings). Doors open at 6 p.m. for the game.

† Whenever I hear or read updates regarding Gary native and Emerson School for Visual and Performing Arts alumnus Chester Gregory, I bring it to you with pride.

If you happen to be in New York City Feb. 4, the Broadway actor (“Sister Act,” the national tour of “Dreamgirls,” “Hairspray”) is branching out with “The Eve of Jackie: A One Man Show.”

“The Eve of Jackie” is described as “a tribute to the music and life of the legendary pop icon, Jackie Wilson. A man who truly gave his all and left it on the stage.”

Gregory co-wrote the production with Crystal Lucas-Perry. Gregory is, of course, portraying Wilson.

If you recall, Gregory sent Chicago area audiences into a frenzy portraying Wilson in the Black Ensemble Theater’s production of “The Jackie Wilson Story (My Heart is Crying, Crying)” years ago.

“The Eve of Jackie” premieres at 9:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at 54 Below, 254 W. 54th St. in New York City. Tickets are $25 general admission, $35 for V.I.P.

Let’s also hope that one day he will bring his one-man show back home.
