Youth March for Change

David King, a senior at the West Side Leadership Academy in Gary and also senior class president, organized a Youth March for Change taking place at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 23, from 25th Avenue and Broadway to 7th Avenue and Broadway. A rally on the steps of City Hall immediately follows. After seeing so many news reports of gun violence in both Gary and Chicago, King met with Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson about organizing the march.

“I just couldn’t sit back and not do anything,” King said. “I want my peers to join me in saying ‘enough is enough’ and to stop all of this violence in our community.” Participants (marchers and vehicles) will meet by 8:30 a.m. to assemble for the march in the rear parking lot at Roosevelt College and Career Academy, 730 W. 25th Ave.

For more information, call 881-1314 or 881-5481. To register an organization to participate, email David King at david.king@iasc.us, or Chelsea Whittington at cwhittington@ci.gary.in.us.

Earlier this month, King delivered his farewell speech at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, ending his tenure as the first African-American to be president of the Indiana Association of the Student Councils 2012-13.

King was also presented with the Dale D. Hawley Leadership Award for outstanding service as president of the Indiana Association of Student Councils.
