Gary mayoral inauguration continues

The inaugural week of Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson continues at 2 p.m. Friday with a “New Day Symposium” at the Genesis Convention Center, One Genesis Plaza, with a press conference introducing some new “Partners with the City” and re-introducing the “New Day” task force.

A press release stated the symposium will present some key recommendations from each committee to the public and questions are highly encouraged from the public. Later that evening at 9, a “Cabaret” networking event takes place at Majestic Star Casino, One Buffington Harbor Drive.

This all leads to the noon swearing-in ceremony Saturday at West Side Leadership Academy auditorium at 9th and Gerry Street.

While Freeman-Wilson had a swearing-in ceremony Jan. 1 with family, close friends and, after a last-minute decision, members of the media, this ceremony will allow the community to share in the monumental moment.

The inaugural ball for Freeman-Wilson happens at 6 p.m. at the Genesis Convention Center with a cocktail hour before a program and dinner. The black tie formal is $100 per person and includes performances by R&B singer Terisa Griffin and the group The Fabulous Kings.

The week concludes at 5 p.m. Sunday with a “Gospel Celebration” at West Side Leadership Academy auditorium with headliner, Grammy winner and Gary native Denise Williams. Other performers include G. Martin, New Hope Baptist Church, the Blakely Family, the Hearne family and Kathy Taylor.

Meanwhile, attorney, former mayoral candidate and now former Gary city councilwoman Ragen Hatcher announced the launch of her law firm, the Hatcher Consulting Group.

In a press release emailed to me earlier this week, she announced that the law firm will focus on real estate and government law and business consulting.

“It is my calling to serve the people in my community, and to offer them the most just solution to their legal issues. I look forward to serving them,” she stated.
