Some very lucky moms will have a special surprise for Mother’s Day, thanks to Martin Binder Jeweler.
For the third consecutive year, Binder’s is giving children the chance to give their moms a special gift of jewelry. The contest, “Shine Like a Gem,” is open to all area youngsters 15 and younger who write a one- or two-paragraph essay telling why their moms deserve a special gift.
And Binder’s isn’t choosing one lucky winner, but six, with two in each age group — 5-and-under, 6-10 and 11-15.
Hey, Dad, if you think your wife is the best mom, tell your kids to write about that special lady now. Don’t wait, because entries are due Saturday, May 5. Essays can be emailed to mothersdaycontest@martinbinders.com, or delivered to the store at 23 Lincolnway in Valparaiso (corner of Franklin and Lincolnway downtown).
The child’s name, age and phone number should be on the back of the essay, but only first name and age on the front.
Kids, wouldn’t it be neat to see the look of surprise on Mom’s face when your letter is in the window of Binder’s?
Thank you, Jeanette, Martin and your Binder family for such a lovely contest that will delight six moms. It is a real honor to your mom’s memory.
I was having a bummer day Monday, thinking of all I needed to get done, late with mailing cards, sitting at a railroad crossing for minutes, and missing every traffic light.
Then I saw him, a little 4- or 5-year-old boy walking with his mom. Suddenly, he ran to the side of the building they were approaching. He bent down, picked up something and, when he ran back to his mom with a sunshine smile on his face, he reached up to her with a tulip in his hand.
The tulip had seen its best days, but that little guy recognized its beauty, and so did his mom. Suddenly, I didn’t feel so hassled anymore. Seeing his expression of love put a lump in my throat, but a smile on my face.
Little fellow, I may never know your name, but I’ll always remember how you reminded me of what’s best in life. You are my pet person of the week.
Hey, all you fire and police departments, have you signed up for South Haven Boys and Girls Club “Battle of the Badges”?
Surely, you want to prove that your group has the most talented basketball players in Porter County. The only way to prove you deserve the title is to register your team at the club.
The team fee is $150, and proceeds will benefit all Porter County Boys and Girls Clubs. Call Ron Ranta at 759-2565 or email him at rranta@bgcpoco.
The tournament will be played May 18 and 19, and the rest of us can show up to cheer for our favorite team.
Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for children accompanied by an adult. There will be some great games going on, so mark your calendar and join the fun.
Then, I hope you have a great day because you deserve it.
Thanks for reading.
Fly your flag.
