What an opportunity — an opportunity to be a little part of the Chicago Marathon. Each year, Opportunity Enterprises packs up thousands of “goodie bags” for the marathon runners, and it takes the help of hundreds of volunteers.
This year’s Packathon will be held Sept. 15, beginning at 8 a.m. and lasting until every bag is packed, around 2 p.m. There are 43,000 bags to stuff with 15 to 20 different items, then boxed and made ready to deliver to the marathon committee.
You can be a part of the assembly line. According to Cathy Kuchenmeister, OE’s volunteer coordinator, 800 volunteers (age 8 and older) are needed that Saturday to fulfill this work. Just think, marathon runners from throughout the world will learn where our little piece of the world is!
This is far more than just stuffing marathon bags. It is actually an event where music keeps everyone jiving, chatter and laughter fill the air, new friends are made, and of course food and drink are enjoyed.
Volunteers are asked to sign up for a two-hour (or longer) shift by Sept. 7. Get a group of friends, club members, neighbors, school chums, or coworkers together and give Cathy a call at 464-9621, Ext. 283, or email her at email@example.com.
She’ll be happy to hear from you, and you’ll be happy to enjoy this event.
While I’m on the subject of OE, a call to Chris Runion at (630) 364-9801 or Elyse Konenakis at 464-9621, Ext.233, can get you on the golf course.
The outing, hosted by volunteers, will be held at Valparaiso Country Club on Aug. 27, and will benefit OE clients. The cost is $125 per golfer, and includes grab-a-lunch, drinks, a steak dinner, and more, more, more fun and activities.
The 18-hole scramble format will begin at 10 a.m., with registration beginning at 9 a.m.
State Sen. Ed Charbonneau and Bolttech Mannings Co. are sponsors, but hole sponsors are still welcome. A $250 sponsor will have a flag on the green in their name, and a $150 sponsor will have a sign posted at the respective hole.
Please call either of the above numbers for more information or to register to play.
Count your blessings
This past week, our daughter Carol and I drove to Colorado to enjoy a visit with our many family members who live in that beautiful state.
Although the weather was perfect for us, it was depressing to see the drooping and dried up cornfields throughout Iowa and Nebraska where the lack of rain was so evident.
And then seeing the devastation in some mountain areas due to the raging fires was humbling as we realize that our world, our livelihood is often at the mercy of nature.
It also demonstrates the resiliency and will of the human spirit as those who were affected by these heartbreaks pick themselves up and begin again. So, each day, whatever life hands you, count your blessings and strive to make your corner of the world a better place.
Then I hope you have a great day because you deserve it.
Thanks for reading. Fly your flag.
