Firefighters concert to benefit local charities

Updated: October 7, 2012 7:53AM

I bet you thought that firemen and women just sit around in their firehouses waiting to be called out for an emergency.

Nope, if you thought that, you would be wrong. Every fire department does some fundraising to help their neighbors and make their community better.

How very special the Valparaiso firefighters are for doing a special concert at the Central Park Plaza Ampitheater to benefit various charities right here in our own back yard, such as Rebuilding Together, and college scholarships for high school seniors.

This delightful program will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, and will offer both Christian and secular music played by Sevenglory, Red Umbrella and Urbanites.

There will be food and drink available including delights from Bon Femme, Don Quijote, Valpo Velvet, and Verona Pizza, plus firefighters grilling some delectable goodies.

A beer and wine tent will be included for those over 21. Bring a blanket or chairs and settle in for an enjoyable evening of music while you eat and drink.

This is a gated event. Advance tickets are $5. If you wait until that evening, the price doubles! Tickets may be purchased at www.itickets.com or call (800) 965-9324.

When we were kids, things like computers, microwaves, and even television were unheard of, except for the wealthy.

Then, once they became part of our lifestyle, most of us took them for granted as part of the norm. Well, we found out quickly how much we rely on our “norms” when our microwave suddenly went kaput without any warning, and no hope of recovery.

That’s OK, we can find ways to compensate for its loss for a few days.

Ha! Within hours, there were four pots/pans that had to be used to heat or reheat food and drinks that would’ve taken just seconds in the microwave. Not only dirty pots, but then there were the extra dishes when the food had to be transferred.

Extra work, extra time — yikes! If this keeps up, we’ll have to live on cold cuts and salad.

Modernization has bitten us. A trip to the store for a new microwave, rather than wait to find a good one at a garage sale, was immediate. Our household is once again content.

All I can say is , shame on us, but it’s a happy shame!

Now I hope you have a great day because you deserve it.

Thanks for reading. Fly your flag.
