Run, do not walk, to Opportunity Enterprises at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, for the first callout meeting to join the OE marathon team, or on Saturday, Jan. 21, pop in to the Omni 41 Health and Fitness Connection at 221 U.S. 41 in Schererville.
By registering during open registration, the runner’s fee is only $50, with a commitment to raise $300 for OE. The membership fee guarantees training programs, complimentary race entry into the Oct. 7 Chicago Marathon, warm-ups, team shirt, race day transportation and lots more.
The funds raised this year will help support “All About Kids,” OE’s program for youngsters up to age 3. If you can’t get to either meeting next week, a call to Chris Scheidt (464-9621, Ext. 233) will put you on this elite marathon team. Or email her at Christine.Scheidt@oppent.org.
Go for it!
It was perfect!
Sunday through Tuesday of this week, athletes from Lake and Porter counties joined other athletes from around the state to enjoy perfect weather with perfect conditions at Perfect North Slopes ski area in Lawrenceberg for Special Olympics Winter Games, which included alpine skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing competition, and then tubing just for fun.
With beautiful blue skies and ideal temperatures, and not a sign of snow anywhere, the slopes at Perfect North were completely covered in white with man-made snow that rivaled the real stuff in quality. None of us could remember a more perfect state winter games.
If you are at all a winter sports enthusiast, take a trip right here in our own state and enjoy a perfect time.
Congratulations to all the athletes for their perfectly great awards, too.
Upon our arrival back to Valparaiso, it didn’t take long for everyone to jump into their cars and head home — except for Diane, whose key refused to unlock the car door. The perfect time was spoiled.
After the umpteenth time of trying and pleading with the key to work, it was time to take drastic action.
With another mom knowing the number to call for Green’s Towing, it wasn’t long before the approach of a tow truck was a pretty sight. In minutes, Shawn had the car door open!
I’m sure many of you know the expense of this kind of need, but when asked the cost, Shawn just said, “That’s OK. I’m glad I could help. Just get the kids home.”
Wow! A calamity turned out perfect, too, and a perfectly kind young man is my pet person of the week.
Thanks again, Shawn.
Support our troops
On a less happy note, it is hard to believe that only a few weeks ago, it was joyful to know that our soldiers were coming home from war in Iraq, and then reading that four members of the Valparaiso-based Indiana National Guard were killed by a roadside bomb, and another young man was seriously injured.
I sincerely hope that all of us continue to support our troops in any and every way we can, and keep them in our daily prayers. Please take time to send a note to the National Guard Armory at 1502 Linwood Ave., Valparaiso, IN, 46383, expressing your sympathy to the families who have lost a loved one willing to keep our country safe.
Then I hope you have a great day because you deserve it. Thanks for reading. Fly your flag.
