VALPARAISO — An unknown person threw a birdbath through the glass door of Quinlan & Fabish Music Company to steal instruments worth $37,947.
According to the police report, 18 brass and woodwind instruments were stolen. Their values ranged from a flugelhorn worth $940 to a French horn worth $3,695.
The burglary happened between 6:42 p.m. Tuesday and 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, when the first employee to arrive noticed when he entered his code into the alarm that the alarm had gone off sometime during the night. However, since he came in the back door and left soon after to make a delivery to Valparaiso High School, he told police he did not see the damage in the front of the business. The damage was discovered by another employee at about 8:40 a.m.
According to the police report, there is no way to determine when the alarm was set off, and no one working at the nearby fire station heard the alarm or saw anything out of the ordinary.
