VALPARAISO — A memorial service for Chris Patterson, a Valparaiso University sophomore who was killed in action in Afghanistan, will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, in the Chapel of the Resurrection.
Patterson was a music education major who took leave from his studies at the university this fall to serve in Afghanistan with his Indiana Army National Guard unit based in Valparaiso. During his time on campus, Patterson was involved in many activities, including ROTC, VuVox, Phi Mu Alpha and the University Chorale.
“Chris embodied the spirit of service and thoughtful leadership that best represent the students who attend Valparaiso University,” VU President Mark A. Heckler said. “He did not hesitate to answer the call of service to his country and gave his life to protect others.”
The special memorial service will last about 90 minutes, and will include remembrances by fellow students and remarks from Heckler. Attendees are encouraged to wear red in honor of the service of Patterson and all who have given their lives in service to their country, and to recognize the men and women of the armed forces.
