5K-9 run to take place in May
A 5K-9 run and 1-mile dog walk was announced Monday, to raise funds toward the purchase of a new K9 for the Valparaiso Police Department and expenses for the K9 unit.
The fundraiser will be May 19 beginning at the Central Park Plaza in downtown Valparaiso. The race start time is 9 a.m. and the walk will start at 9:15 a.m., rain or shine, on a road course with moderate hills. Preregister at www.thtiming.com. The cost is $20 in advance or $23 the day of the event; youths 12 and under can participate in the walk for $13.
The event also will include entertainment, food and demonstrations from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is hosted by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 76 .
Those who register at least 10 days in advance will get moisture-wicking shirts.
Minors arrested at apartment party
Several people were arrested at an underage drinking party at about 10:10 p.m. Friday, in the 1100 block of Evans.
Apartment resident Anthony Capuano, 21, is charged with furnishing alcohol to a minor, a misdemeanor, police said. Those charged with underage drinking were a 17-year-old Valparaiso female, a 15-year-old Valparaiso male, a 17-year-old Schererville male, a 16-year-old Valparaiso male, a 17-year-old Valparaiso female, and Joshua Saqui, 18, of Valparaiso. The juveniles were released to their parents.
Apply for Citizens Police Academy
Community members are invited to apply to attend the Valparaiso Police Department’s annual Citizens Police Academy.
Participants will meet officers and learn what they do on a daily basis. Featured topics include investigations, Indiana law, daily traffic laws and enforcement, crash investigations and patrol division duties including specialties such as canine presentations, bicycle team, Taser usage and firearms scenarios.
The class will begin April 10 and meet at 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday for 10 weeks. Applications, available at the department at 355 S. Washington St. or online at www.valparaisopolice.org, must be returned by March 23. Space is limited.
