Autopsy: Gunman in Valpo hostage situation took his own life

Updated: May 29, 2012 7:55PM

VALPARAISO — Autopsy results received Tuesday confirmed the gunman in a Friday police stand-off in Valparaiso took his own life.

Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris said Roy Ferguson died from two self-inflicted gunshot wounds to the head. The first of the shots landed in the frontal lobe and did not kill him. The second gunshot wound was the fatal blow.

A shot to the body was non-life threatening, he said. Harris said he could not comment on whether or not the bullets in all three shots came from the same weapon or if the shot to the body was caused by Ferguson himself.

He referred all questions about the third gunshot wound and type and caliber of weapons used to the Indiana State Police, which is handling the investigation at this time.
