PORTAGE

Traffic stop nets drug charges

Joshua Towne, 22, of Portage, was arrested for dealing marijuana and several other felony drug charges during a 10:20 p.m. Wednesday traffic stop, at Old Porter Road and Marine, for swerving and failing to use a turn signal. Police said Towne’s vehicle was searched because he was shaking as if he were nervous, and Towne gave his consent.

Police said Towne had several pills in his pants pocket and admitted he did not have a prescription, leading to charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of a legend drug. He also faces charges for having several plastic bags of loose marijuana, 14 partially smoked joints and assorted drug paraphernalia in the vehicle, according to the arrest report. Towne admitted selling marijuana “to support his own habit,” police said.

VALPARAISO

Two arrested at courthouse drunk

Nick Tankersley, 46, of Valparaiso, was arrested for public intoxication at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday just outside a Porter County courtroom at 16 E. Lincolnway. Tankersley, whose blood-alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit, told police his last drink was on Tuesday.

Carole Gallegos, 42, of rural Valparaiso, was arrested for public intoxication at about 3 p.m. Wednesday after admittedly drinking beer before an appointment in the courthouse’s probation office, police said.

PORTER COUNTY

Husband arrested on battery charge

A 50-year-old man reportedly injured his 46-year-old wife when he fought her in an attempt to look inside her purse. The victim told police Gary Banic yanked the purse out of her hands and dragged her by the hair at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at their home, in the 200 block of Northwind Drive. Banic was arrested for misdemeanor battery.
