VALPARAISO — A 48-year-old rural Valparaiso man stabbed his brother with a knife as they fought outside their mother’s home at about 5:50 p.m. Wednesday.

The abdominal wound is not life-threatening but the victim, Steven Gamblin, 39, of Valparaiso, was admitted to Porter hospital for observation. Timothy Gamblin, 48, of rural Valparaiso, was transported to Porter hospital for complaints of head pain.

According to the police report, Steven Gamblin went to the home, in the 100 block of Spectacle Drive north of Valparaiso, to pick up his son for visitation. When Timothy Gamblin, 48, arrived at the home where he lives with his mother, the brothers started arguing outside.

The arguing turned to spitting and soon they were wrestling, the men’s mother told police. She did not see who made the first move but said that at one point, Steven was on top of Timothy and punching him in the head. Timothy told police this was when he felt his life was in danger, so he took a knife from his pocket and stabbed Steven in the stomach.

Steven’s juvenile son told police he witnessed the fight and heard Timothy yell, “Now you’re gonna die!” then saw him holding a bloody knife.

No one has yet been arrested or charged in the attack, but Porter County prosecutors are reviewing the incident.
