PORTER COUNTY
Jewelry, antique sword stolen
Jewelry worth approximately $31,000 — including a Rolex watch and numerous diamonds and other gemstones — plus a 20-inch Revolutionary War sword with a leather handle, worth $2,500 on its own, were reported stolen from a condominium in the 1300 block of Winding Ridge Road, north of Valparaiso.
The home’s doors and windows were locked when the owner left May 23 and when she returned June 3, but she told police she did not change the locks when she moved into the condo in April.
Nothing was out place and she did not notice anything was missing until Wednesday, she told police.
Guns, credit cards stolen from homes
Two homes were broken into Wednesday in the 600 block of West County Road 50N, in rural Union Township.
The first burglary happened between 12:45 and 1:25 p.m. The back door was forced open and two bedrooms were ransacked. Credit cards, a checkbook and jewelry were stolen, according to the police report.
The second burglary was between 4:30 and 8 p.m., and the victim had left the front door open but the television on, to make it appear someone was home. Eight guns — two of them loaded — were stolen, but a number of other firearms were taken from their hiding places and left behind in the living room, police said.
Another neighbor reported seeing a gray Ford SUV driving suspiciously up and down County Road 50N at about 10 mph, at about 1 p.m.
