LAKE ELIZA

Man wounded

Friday afternoon

A dispute between two men left one of them wounded in the arm Friday afternoon.

Porter County Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Larry LaFlower said a 27-year-old male from the Lake Eliza area suffered a shotgun wound to the arm. He was taken to Porter hospital in Valparaiso for treatment.

The shooting took place at 16 McCurahan St., south of Division Road and east of County Road 600W.

LaFlower declined to release the names of the men involved and said police were still investigating the shooting.

PORTAGE

Employee battered by shoplifter

Portage police officers are seeking two men (pictured) who reportedly attempted to steal a large number of items at about 1 p.m. Wednesday from the Portage Wal-Mart; one of the men battered a store security agent who tried to stop them.

Police said each man put a large tote into a shopping cart and filled the totes with merchandise, including alcohol, then attempted to leave without paying. They left in a maroon, older model Ford F-150 pickup. A sunburned woman with red hair and a large tattoo across her back was in the truck bed, according to the police report.

Anyone who can identify or comes into contact with the individuals is asked to call Sgt. Nick Grynovich at 762-3122.

PORTER COUNTY

Man uninjured in crash while drunk

Steven Vianello, 25, of Hammond, admitted he was drunk and had been smoking marijuana before crashing into a guardrail of a weigh station ramp off eastbound Interstate 94. Another driver, who told police he was on the phone with 911 and following Vianello’s Buick after it nearly struck his vehicle earlier, said the car veered south inexplicably while traveling more than 90 miles per hour.

Vianello, who was not injured, was charged with drunken driving and driving without ever receiving a license, police said. His passenger, a 23-year-old Crown Point man, did not need medical care.

BOONE GROVE

Thefts over the past three weeks are delaying the construction of new bleachers at Boone Grove High School, 260 S. County Road 500W, according to a police report made Thursday. The missing aluminum parts are valued at $1,150.
