SOUTH HAVEN

Vehicle owners catch theft suspect

A group of theft victims chased down Kyle Slease, 18, of South Haven, at about 7:30 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Baltimore Road and Lahonda Drive. Two men pinned Slease to the ground until an officer arrived and Slease admitted to stealing items from a number of vehicles, police said. The stolen property included work boots, global positioning units, cigarettes and cash.

Slease was arrested for alleged unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and criminal mischief, and on two Porter County warrants, for battery and for a revocation of his probation. The total number of thefts from vehicles wasn’ clear, and additional charges are expected.

Another 18-year-old man from a different South Haven address also is a suspect, police said.

VALPARAISO

Furniture taken from front porch

Patio furniture was reported stolen between 10:30 a.m. Monday and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday from the front porch of a home in the 300 block of South County Road 600W, rural Hebron. A frosted-glass table and four brown chairs are missing, for an estimated loss of $1,500, according to the police report.

Wanted man and his mom arrested

When a 22-year-old man snuck out a window to avoid police with an arrest warrant, he was arrested along with his mother, who told officers she had not seen him and did not know where he lives.

Dimitrius Schirato, of the 800 block of Wood Street, was wanted on felony charges of forgery, retaining stolen property and failure to company. Police said a misdemeanor charge of resisting law enforcement was added for his attempt to avoid arrest at about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. Kimberly Schirato, 50, is charged with false informing, a misdemeanor.

PORTER COUNTY

Jewelry worth $15,000 reported stolen

A large amount of jewelry worth an estimated $15,000 was reported stolen in a residential break-in between 7:10 a.m. and 4:50 p.m. Thursday in the 600 west block of Division Road, west of Lake Eliza. A shoe-shaped hole was found in a rear patio door, and approximately five necklaces, 20 pairs of earrings, nine rings and a 1976 Merrillville High School class ring were taken, police said.

Man charged with repeat drunken driving

Daniel Ford, 39, of Valparaiso, was arrested at about 12:35 a.m. Friday, in the 600 block of the North Indiana 49 bypass, for felony drunken driving with a prior conviction and misdemeanor driving with a suspended license.

CHESTERTON

Shed allowed access to apartment window

Between 7:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, $580 was reported stolen from an apartment in the 2100 block of Annabelle Court. Police said it appeared someone climbed on a small storage shed to get to an unsecured window, and an attempt was made to get into another apartment on the property also.

PORTAGE

Catalytic converters stolen outside church

Two catalytic converters were reported stolen off a white 2009 Toyota Tacoma pickup between 5 a.m. and 4:10 p.m. Thursday from Crossroads Family Church, at 2386 Willowcreek Road, police said. The damage is estimated at $3,000.
