VALPARAISO

Time served for Portage man

The 209 days a Portage man spent in Porter County Jail will be his only incarceration for a burglary that allegedly included a recently killed Valparaiso woman.

Richard John Shoback, 48, pleaded to Class D felony theft for breaking into a Valparaiso apartment in July 2010 that was recently vacated and into the one next door that had tenants.

A witness saw Shoback and Shawnna Forgus, who was killed Feb. 20 at age 22, walking around the apartment building and looking into the garage.

Shoback was originally charged with Class C felony burglary for taking a gaming system, four games, a heater and a vacuum that tenants left in the vacated apartment and two watches and two baseball caps from the other apartment

A safe from the closet in the vacated apartment was left on the floor unopened

For the remainder of Shoback’s three-year sentence, he’ll be on probation. Forgus was not charged in this incident.
