Man arrested for batteries at Fair
Johnnie Kirk, 26, of Gary, was arrested at about 9:55 p.m. Monday for allegedly punching two people while at the midway at the Porter County Fair.
The primary victim, a 28-year-old DeMotte man, told police he was with his 27-year-old wife and their children when they ran into the mother of his other child. The DeMotte man said he exchanged words with the woman’s boyfriend and then, suddenly, an unknown man punched him four times in the jaw. The unknown man - later identified as Kirk and a cousin of the boyfriend - also punched the victim’s wife in the shoulder when she tried to get between them, other fair-goers told police.
Kirk is charged with two counts of battery and one of disorderly conduct, all misdemeanors.
Stolen home safe had no valuables
A home was broken into between 5:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Monday in the 1300 north block of County Road 450E, east of Chesterton. Police said the back door was pried open to get into the attached garage, and the door leading to the house also was damaged during the burglary. A safe was stolen from a bedroom closet, but it did not contain anything valuable, the victim told police.
Prescription meds missing from home
Morphine and ADHD medication were reported stolen Sunday or Monday from a home in the 500 block of Glenwood Drive, northwest of Valparaiso. The residents believe a guest may have stolen the prescription drugs - 19 morphine pills and 22 Vyvanse - according to the police report.
Cocaine found during traffic stop
Police smelled marijuana after stopping Jason Boumis, 24, of Hobart, at about 4:45 p.m. Sunday, for not obeying a stop sign at Samuelson Road and Silver Cloud Drive, in Portage Township. Boumis ultimately was arrested for felony possession of 15 grams of cocaine, and misdemeanor possession of 21.5 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Man charged with domestic battery
Paul Hamilton, 29, was arrested for felony domestic battery in the presence of a child, after allegedly grabbing and pushing a 30-year-old woman at about 12:30 p.m. Monday at their home, in the 500 block of Danlee Drive, near Portage.

Older Chevy stolen from dealership
A dark blue 2002 Chevrolet Impala worth $5,000 was reported stolen between noon Saturday and 7:40 a.m. Tuesday from D&L Auto Sales, at 806 N. County Road 360W.
