Consumers will have the opportunity to exchange an old gas can for a new one for free as a result of the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission’s annual gas can exchange program, hosted in conjuction with the Household Hazard Waste Collection Program.
Kathy Luther, director of environmental programs said old and leaky gas cans are a major contributor to air pollution and ozone formation. The new gas cans will be given for free, and are leak-proof and no-spill. They are made of thick plastic which prevents harmful gases from escaping.
The exchanges are taking place at the following locations:
July 28: Highland Public Works, 8001 Kennedy Ave., Highland
Aug. 11: Portage High School, 6450 E. U.S. 6, Portage
Sept. 22: Hobart City Barns, 340 South Shelby, Hobart
Oct. 6: Lake County Fair Grounds, 889 South Court St., Crown Point
Oct. 27: Munster Public Works, 508 Fisher St., Munster
