VALPARAISO — Sharon Qualkenbush will be the new chief financial officer for Valparaiso Community Schools.
In a special meeting Tuesday the Valparaiso School Board accepted Interim Superintendent Mike Berta’s recommendation to hire Qualkenbush, who had worked in the same position under him before he retired from Portage Township Schools this spring.
Qualkenbush will receive a salary of $105,000, a $5,000 annuity and a car allowance equivalent to $3,600.
She may also participate in the corporation’s self-funded health plan.
Her 124 unused sick days from Portage Township Schools will be transferred to Valparaiso Schools.
Board President Mark Maassel said he was thrilled with the recommendation to hire Qualkenbush. “He went for quality,” Maassel said.
Qualkenbush thanked the board for the opportunity to serve the community in which she resides. Her children graduated from Valparaiso schools, she said.
Jim Doane, assistant to the superintendent, said all certified positions were filled.
“We had a great pool of talented applicants,” he said, noting that the retirements and resignations accepted Tuesday were expected. As for non-certified and extra-curricular positions, “We’re as close to 100 percent as we can be,” he said.
