Insurance collected fraudulently

A 67-year-old rural Valparaiso man told police an unknown person used his name to collect on a fraudulent life insurance claim.

According to the police report made Monday, the Traveler’s Life Insurance policy, in an unknown amount, covered the man’s sister-in-law and listed him as the beneficiary. It was claimed about a week ago, an insurance agent told the man.

The local man told police the sister-in-law died almost 23 years ago.

Man admit stealing from neighbors

Twenty-year-old Skyler Smith allegedly was caught Tuesday morning stealing from his neighbors’ vehicles in the 700 block of Acadia Road.

One victim told police she saw the young man inside her unlocked Jeep at about 3:30 a.m. When her husband confronted him, but the man walked away.

Another neighbor directed police to Smith’s house. Police said Smith admitted to taking tools from three vehicles as he walked home after drinking beer at a friend’s home, and he left the items under the Jeep where he was spotted.

Smith was arrested on three counts of felony theft.
