Man smashed window with stolen golf club

Kaleb Wall, 23, of Portage, allegedly stole a golf club out of a pickup and used it to smash his way into another vehicle, to take a purse left on the front seat.

A witness called police at about 1:20 a.m. Sunday to the parking lot of Northside Tap, 712 Calumet Ave. Police chased Wall on foot to Valparaiso Street, where an officer shocked him with a Taser to stop him.

Wall was arrested for felony theft and misdemeanor resisting law enforcement, public intoxication and criminal mischief.

Driver struck parked vehicle while battering woman

Michael Weiss, 24, of LaCrosse, was arrested for allegedly choking a 22-year-old woman while he was driving, then striking a parked vehicle at about 1:35 a.m. Sunday in the 400 block of Institute Street, police said. Weiss is charged with felony strangulation and misdemeanor drunken driving, leaving the scene of a crash and domestic battery.

Stolen jacket found near the scene

Desirra Clark, 47, of Valparaiso, was arrested for felony theft for allegedly stealing a leather jacket and mP3 player at about 1:50 a.m. Tuesday from a temporarily vacated table at Duffy’s Place. Police found the motorcycle jacket, with a white skull on the front, in a vehicle parked outside the bar, at 1154 Axe Ave.

Hobart man accused of huffing in Wal-Mart aisles

A man accused of inhaling the aerosol from two cans of deodorant while standing in the aisles of Wal-Mart, 6087 U.S. 6, was arrested early Tuesday morning.

An employee tried to speak with the suspect, Todd Lunsford, 24, of Hobart, but he only mumbled a reply and then went to the clothing section, putting the store’s clothing over his own even though employees were watching him, according to the police report.

Lunsford was arrested at about 12:20 a.m. for felony theft, felony possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor inhaling toxic vapors and public intoxication. Generic Xanax in a cigarette wrapper and suspected synthetic marijuana were in Lunsford’s vehicle, which he left running with the keys in the ignition, according to the police report.

Couple arrested for not staying apart

A local couple are charged with misdemeanor invasion of privacy, for allegedly violating protective orders they have against each other.

Stephen Zemlik, 29, of Portage, and Lauren Curran, 22, of Michigan City, were arrested at about 8:10 p.m. Sunday at the Travel Inn, at 6101 U.S. 20.

Zemlik also was charged with felony possession of heroin, possession of a controlled substance and maintaining a common nuisance; plus misdemeanor possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Curran was arrested for visiting a common nuisance.

A child in the room was released to a relative.

Stolen semi discovered at Travel Center

A stolen semi and two trailers were found at about 9:50 a.m. Sunday at Travel Center of America South, 1441 W. U.S. 20. The vehicles’ tires and lugnuts had been removed and replaced with old tires, police said.
