PORTER COUNTY
Suspect runs after crashing mom’s car
Police requested a warrant to arrest a 25-year-old Portage Township man who allegedly crashed a vehicle while eluding police but still got away on foot. When officers contacted the owner of the red 2007 Ford Focus, she said she was sure her son was driving it.
At about 12:55 a.m. Friday, police said, an officer clocked the Ford at 80 miles per hour in a 30 mph zone on County Road 700N. The driver reportedly ignored the squad car’s lights and sirens, continuing without stopping through the stop sign at Swanson Road, turning off the headlights and pulling into a driveway in the 700 block of West County Road 700N. However, it kept going past the end of the driveway and continued down a path into the woods behind the house, stopping only when it crashed into a tree. Police with a canine were unsuccessful in searching for the suspect.
The man is expected to be charged with one felony — resisting law enforcement with a vehicle; multiple misdemeanors, including resisting law enforcement, driving with a suspended license, reckless driving and leaving the scene of a crash; and to be ticketed for speeding, disregarding a stop sign and failure to use headlights.
