PORTER COUNTY

Burglar searched former hiding spot

A burglar broke into a Gary/Hobart Roofing, at 401 E. U.S. 30, and got away with $50 from the cash register. Police said an exterior door and an interior door to the main office were pried open during the burglary, between 5 p.m. Tuesday and 6:15 a.m. Wednesday. Drawers in another office also had been opened — an employee told police this was where money used to be kept until it was taken to the bank, but this practice changed after a June burglary.

Rings worth $6,000 stolen

Fifteen rings worth $6,000 were reported stolen between Sept. 18 and Thursday from a home in the 200 block of Armada Lane, in rural Chesterton. There was no forced entry to the house. Police have information on a suspect who had access to the master bedroom bathroom where the rings had been kept.

10-year-old car reported stolen

A locked, green 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo was reported stolen between 3:30 p.m. Thursday and 12:10 a.m. Friday from an apartment complex parking lot in the 700 block of Pittsburg Avenue. The car is worth an estimated $1,100.

Meter reader reported suspicions

Ronnie Gentry, 33, was arrested for felony domestic battery, in the presence of a child, at about 8 a.m. Thursday at his home, in the 800 block of Oak Street. A NIPSCO meter reader called police when he heard yelling and items being broken. The 28-year-old female victim denied Gentry hurt her, but there was a cut under her eye and dried blood on her jaw, police said, as well as blood on Gentry’s wrist.

Police bust party, underage drinkers

A complaint of loud music led police to charge eight people on misdemeanor underage drinking charges at a party at about 2:20 a.m. Friday, at an apartment at 4709 Andover Court. Joseph Rodriguez, 19, of Portage, was found unconscious and was taken to Porter Regional Hospital for his high intoxication level. Those arrested at the scene were Krystal Castillo, 20, and Alayna Johnson, 19, both of Valparaiso; Anthony Sweeney, 19, Peter Cashman, 20, and Christopher Spar, 18, all of Portage; Ryan Russell, 18, of Merrillville; and Stephanie Husek, 19, of Hobart.
