PORTAGE — Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris said a man was found dead inside a house at 2147 Pennsylvania St. shortly before 2 p.m. today.
Portage Police were called to the house for a welfare check because neighbors noticed newspapers were piling up outside and family members couldn’t reach the man by phone. Sgt. Keith Hughes said the homeowner had a violent past, so the Porter County SWAT team was called to the scene in case there were any problems. Hughes said the homeowner had various restraining orders filed against him and police had confiscated guns from the house.
Hughes said the man was found dead in a chair with a newspaper and he may have been dead for several days. The cause of death will be determined after an autopsy and toxicology tests. Identification is pending further investigation because the body was “moderately decomposed,” Harris said.
Harris guessed the man was about 50 years old.
