Valparaiso

No tear down of old depot planned yet

The former Grand Trunk Railroad depot, now owned by the Canadian National Railroad, isn’t in danger of being torn down soon despite Tuesday being a deadline to save it.

Valparaiso City Planner Tyler Kent said Canadian National hasn’t picked up the permit to demolish the unused depot on Bush Street, just west of Calumet Avenue. Kent said the city is talking with the railroad.

The possible demolition of the depot, not officially designated a historic structure, caused concern among residents and led to a Sept. 17 meeting to find ways to purchase the building from the railroad.

Those trying to save it have a Facebook page.
