VALPARAISO — Three people reportedly spent much of Saturday drinking alcohol and shooting an assortment of firearms in a Washington Township trailer park.
The first police officer responding to a witness’ complaint at about 6 p.m. was greeted by the sound of rapid fire coming from the park in the 3500 block of East Evans Avenue, just east of Valparaiso. She asked two men in the area where the shooting was coming from and followed their directions, but then heard the sound of a gun being loaded in the area where the men had been. She came back around and found the two men standing with a long gun at the door of a recreational vehicle.
When the sole officer at the scene pointed her gun at them and ordered them to drop the weapon, the man holding the gun did so but then walked away as she put handcuffs on the other man, Bryce Relitz, 35, of Kouts. When a second officer arrived at the scene, he arrested another occupant of the RV, Laura Burns, 39, of Gary, while additional officers and a canine searched for the suspect who walked away.
Relitz, who is charged with felony criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, reportedly told police they had been shooting a number of registered guns throughout the day. Police found bullet holes in the wall of an unoccupied trailer and several spent casings.
Burns was arrested on the same charge. Both smelled of alcohol, police said.
Police have asked prosecutors for a warrant to arrest the third suspect, a 48-year-old resident of the park, for the same felony charge plus misdemeanor resisting law enforcement.
