Car stolen, crashed across the street
A light blue 2007 Chevrolet sedan was reported stolen from a driveway and crashed into a ditch across the street. The 23-year-old owner told police she started the vehicle and left it warming up, and with the doors unlocked, at about 6:40 a.m. Thursday in the 500 block of West County Road 450S.
She came out a few minutes later with her children and followed tire marks in the yard to the road, over a mailbox and into the ditch about 10 yards down the street, where she found the car with its parking brake still on, according to the police report. The car’s bumper was damaged.
Driver in crash offered to pay until cops called
James Scott, 51, of LaPorte, was arrested after admitting he had been drinking before being involved in a hit-and-run crash at about 11:30 p.m. Thursday, at the intersections of County Road 400E and County Road 600N in Jackson Township.
A 23-year-old Crown Point man told police a Ford Edge “blew through the stop sign” and rear-ended him. The driver reportedly stopped, offered to pay for the damage, but then allegedly fled when the victim said he was going to report the crash to police.
Police found the car, with heavy front-end damage, in the driveway of a nearby house and discovered Scott inside visiting friends. Scott is charged with several misdemeanors, including drunken driving and leaving the scene of a crash.
