VALPARAISO — With almost two-thirds of the Porter County precinct vote totals tallied, incumbent County Surveyor Kevin Breitzke, a Democrat, had a comfortable margin over his Republican opponent, Rich Hudson.

Breitzke, 57, of Valparaiso, was seeking his fifth term as county surveyor. He had worked with a local land-surveying firm before being elected to office. He faced political newcomer Hudson, 64, also of Valparaiso, a senior survey manager.

Both candidates said drainage is a major concern for the Surveyor’s Office, as is keeping up the public land surveyor system.

Breitzke has said he ran to retain the surveyor’s seat because he wanted to continue the progress he has made while in office, including working through a priority drainage project list drafted around the start of 2011.

The Surveyor’s Office also has set up a revenue stream through an assessment on regulated drains to tackle drainage problems under Breitzke’s tenure.
