The Portage Township School Board race saw at-large incumbent Debra Ekdahl easily overcome her three challengers to win a second term on the board.

With 91 percent of the vote counted, Ekdahl took 43 percent to retain her at-large seat. Insurance agent Ken Lorenz in his first attempt at running for office came in a surprisingly strong second with 36 percent of the vote and challengers Leonard Clark and Rex Hood Jr. split the remaining vote.

Ekdahl was ebullient in her victory. “I’m so glad it’s over; it was tough. I did a lot of walking and talked to a lot of people,” said Ekdahl. She and former Portage Mayor Olga Velazquez had spent the evening together watching and waiting for the election results.

“I thank the voters for giving me the opportunity to continue to serve and work hard for our students, families and teachers,” she said as results were finalized.

Three challengers entered the race for the District 3 School Board seat being vacated by retiring board member Glenda Owens.

Newcomer Jessica Bailey easily cruised to victory, crushing her opponents by taking 59 percent of the vote in the three-way race. Her nearest competitor was local cop David Czilli, taking 25 percent of the vote with distant challenger Billy Coker taking 15 percent of the total.

Bailey was unavailable for comment.
