Teen arrested for stealing pizza
Benjamin Perez, 18, was arrested on two felony charges — residential entry and theft — for reportedly going into his older sister’s home without her permission and stealing an extra large JJ’s Pizza Shack pepperoni pizza at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The woman told police her brother looked back and smiled at her as he ran away.
Both siblings live in the 400 block of 4th Street. Police found Perez at home.
He and a female Portage teen visiting the home both were charged with underage drinking, although the teen was not implicated in the theft and was released to a parent.
Teen ID’d as person hit by police car
A 19-year-old Merrillville man went to the hospital for treatment after he was hit by a Merrillville police car Sunday night.
Sylvester T. Smith III was hit about 9 p.m. near 75th Avenue and Madison Street while he was walking in the area, according to Lake County police spokeswoman Patti Van Til.
Because the crash involved a Merrillville police officer, Lake County police were asked to investigate the crash.
However, Van Til could not provide the name of the police officer driving the squad car, the nature of Smith’s injuries or any contributing factors that led to the teen’s injuries, which are unknown.
