Valpo middle school students can spell success

WEST LAFAYETTE — Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Valparaiso took home its sixth consecutive state Spell Bowl championship in its division Saturday with a perfect score of 72, marking the school’s ninth Class 2 win overall.
Thomas Jefferson was one of 30 middle schools from throughout the state — broken into four divisions based on school enrollment — to compete in the Spell Bowl, held on the Purdue University campus.
Class 1 finalists included Benjamin Franklin Middle School, also of Valparaiso, and Kahler Middle School in Dyer; River Forest Junior/Senior School in Hobart; and Morgan Township Middle/Senior School in Valparaiso.
Area high schools, including Hanover Central, Andrean, Kouts and Morgan Township, also participated in Spell Bowl at Purdue on Saturday.
