Friend accused of theft at sleep-over
A 20-year-old Gary man is expected to be charged with three counts of felony theft after allegedly stealing more than $2,000 worth of electronics from two former friends’ apartment in the 700 block of Heritage Road. The victims told police they were friends with the suspect in high school and invited him to stay over Monday night. Then at about 10 a.m. Tuesday, the suspect reportedly left the home, as the occupants slept, taking two of their cell phones, a video game console with multiple games, two laptop computers and an assortment of credit cards, among other property. One resident said she woke as the suspect shut the front door, and she saw he had their property.
Pot, cash seized in speeding stop
Erich Merkner, 27, of rural Valparaiso, was arrested at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday for felony possession of 17.8 grams of marijuana and felony possession of drug paraphernalia. Police also seized $468 cash as evidence. Merkner was stopped for speeding on U.S. 30 at Linwood Avenue, police said.
