a sex offender
A bloodied woman crying with two children met officers checking on a 911 hang-up call at about 12:05 a.m. Tuesday. The 41-year-old male suspect had fled the rural Chesterton home, in the 600 block of East County Road 900N.
The 38-year-old victim told police the suspect had punched her in the head, kicked her in the face and dragged her out of the house by her hair. He allegedly continued battering her outside, including pulling out a large kitchen knife and cutting her hand with it. The children, ages 8 and 10, told police they heard the fight but did not leave their bedrooms for fear of getting in trouble.
The suspect is a registered sex offender, convicted of sexual battery, who is listed on the county’s registry as noncompliant; he listed a Portage address despite living with the victim and her children.

There was no forced entry, police said. A neighbor reported seeing a red truck driving slowly through the neighborhood around the same time period.

He complained of feeling sick and was treated at Portage Hospital before he was jailed. He also is charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police found several holes and seemingly associated blood splatter on the walls, floor and bed sheets. Their two guests also were arrested: Michael Kidd, 20, of Kansas, for underage drinking; and Joel Vargas, 22, of Burnham, Ill., for possession of marijuana.
