VALPARAISO — The Valparaiso City Utilities bad debt write-off for 2011 is second only to the 2006 write-off.
The past year’s write off is $46,500, almost double from the $24,449 for 2010 and a little more than $1,000 less than $47,296 in 2006.
“It kind of correlates with what’s going on out there in the real world,” customer service manager Shaun Shifflett said at Tuesday’s Utility Board meeting.
The 263 account write-off includes $8,500 in bankruptcies, up from $5,600 last year, and $3,300 in foreclosures and sheriff’s sales.
The water write-off equals .35 percent of the 2012 budgeted water revenue, and the sewage is .19 percent of that budgeted revenue.
City Utilities has 25 liens against properties.
“Just because we’ve written it off doesn’t mean we’re not pursuing it,” Shifflett said.
