High-end toolbox, tools stolen
A large toolbox and two impact air guns were reported stolen between 5 and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday from an unlocked backyard shed in the 300 block of West County Road 550N, in Salt Creek Commons. The loss is estimated at $5,800.
Firefighter injured in suspected arson
Investigators found probable accelerants at the site of a Portage home fire Wednesday night that injured a firefighter and killed a dog.
At 6:08 p.m., the Portage Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 2571 Hamstrom Road. There was heavy fire in the front half of a small, cinder-block residential structure.
Firefighters entered through the rear of the building to search for vicitims and quell the blaze, but they retreated when they encountered a great deal of heat. Firefighter Jordan Bucy suffered second degree burns to both his ears. He was treated at Porter Hospital’s Portage campus and released.
The fire was extinguished at 7:03 p.m., and investigators found a dog that died as a result of the fire. Crews noticed several suspicious details, including the rear door of the home having been forced open before firefighters’ arrival. Investigator Jeremy Himan and K9 Bosco detected areas of probable accelerants and several accelerant pour patterns on the floor.
If anyone has information regarding the fire, they can call the Portage Fire Department at 762-7404 or the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Arson TipLine at (800) 382-4628.
