Woman must repay several bad checks
A 66-year-old Valparaiso woman pleaded guilty to four of the eight felonies against her for bouncing about $9,825 in checks.
Linda M. Gorincen pleaded Tuesday to one of four Class C felony check fraud charges and three of four Class D felony theft charges and will repay the money she owes while on about 11 years on probation after her March 5 sentencing.
Gorincen told police she was having trouble surviving on Social Security. The checks, written between January and October 2011, were for $1,925 and $1,780 to landlords, $3,736 to Super 8 Motel in Valparaiso for a 92-day stay and $2,384 to Aaron’s for rental items including two televisions, a refrigerator, a Blu-Ray player and a computer with software.
Beer poured down back, purse taken
A Valparaiso couple has been charged with two class D felonies each, theft and fraud, for a purse-stealing scam in a bar.
Tammie J. Martin and Steven E. McCorkle, both 34, allegedly talked to another couple at Franklin House pub on Aug. 31 when one dumped a beer down the victim’s back.
The victims said when she turned to wipe it off, her purse and the couple were gone, which was a $700 loss between items in the purse and the $200 in credit card charges that Martin and McCorkle were caught making on Wal-Mart surveillance.
They told police they were drunk and unemployed and wouldn’t normally do that. Bond is set at $8,500.
