PORTER COUNTY

Dog growled at potential burglar

A growling dog may have thwarted a burglary at about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday at a home on Muirfield Drive in the Aberdeen subdivision, southwest of Valparaiso. The 41-year-old female resident told police her dog was disturbed by a noise outside and began growling. She did not investigate until morning, when muddy shoe prints were found on top of the exterior air conditioning unit and a screen removed from a window was found behind it, police said. The home was not entered and nothing was missing.

Shotgun, bow,
arrows, iPod taken

An unknown person lifted a garage door enough to crawl underneath then stole a shotgun, bow and arrows overnight Tuesday in the 700 block of West Division Road, police said. An iPod touch also was reported stolen, bringing the loss to $1,650, police said.

Habitual traffic
offender arrested

Mark Beschinski, 30, of Chesterton, was arrested on a felony charge of driving despite being a habitual traffic offender, in a traffic stop at about 7 p.m. Wednesday in the 300 block of West County Road 500N, in Union Township. Beschinski acknowledged he was not supposed to drive but said it was his only way to get to work.
