VALPARAISO — A head-on crash involving a school bus in Union Township injured two children and both drivers Thursday afternoon. Porter County Sheriff’s Department officers responded to a call about 3:30 p.m. in the 100 block of North County Road 500W. The initial investigation indicates that a southbound Union Township School Corp. bus was hit by a northbound 2000 Jeep that swerved left of center.
“There was a sudden stop in front of the driver,” said Sgt. Larry LaFlower, Porter County Sheriff spokesman, “and she swerved to avoid the car in front, and that’s when she struck the bus head-on.”
The school bus contained 17 elementary children, according to a Sheriff’s Department news release. Two girls, 9 and 10 years old, complained of neck pain and were transported to St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart for treatment.
The Jeep was driven by Tara Kalamir, 65, of Valparaiso. She sustained lacerations to her face. The school bus was driven by Tracy Gallagher, 38, of Valparaiso. She complained of pain to her wrists.
Kalamir was issued a citation for driving left of center. Weather was not considered a factor in the accident according to LaFlower.
