No one hurt in train vs. van crash
No one was injured when a train crashed into a van on the railroad tracks at 9:11 p.m. Thursday near Meridian Road and County Road 900N.
The van’s driver told police she was making a turn but “did not make it fast enough,” and the van slid to the west and got stuck on the tracks. A train came a short time after she and her two passengers got out of the vehicle. Police listed unsafe speed for weather conditions and unsafe turning as the crash’s causes.
Shorewood Forest, Lake Eliza residents report thefts
A number of locked and unlocked vehicles were found broken into Thursday morning in two subdivision southwest of Valparaiso.
In Shorewood Forest, five vehicles were entered overnight Wednesday. The thief or thieves broke the window of a vehicle in the 500 block of Wexford Road to steal personal electronics and clothing.
Four more vehicles were entered in the 400 block of Scarborough Road and the 400 block of Cambridge Court. The items stolen included a saxophone and hunting knives.
In nearby Lake Eliza, an unknown person entered two vehicles on Sierra Madre and one in the 500 block of West Lakeshore Drive.
The stolen items are worth more than $3,000 all together.
Furnace, water heater taken from unoccupied house
A furnace and hot water heater were reported stolen between Dec. 8 and Thursday from a foreclosed home in the 700 block of Heritage Road. The loss was estimated at $1,450.
Packages stolen from door
Two UPS packages were reported stolen between 5:50 and 7 p.m. Monday from the front door of a house in the 400 block of Pembroke Road. The stolen property is worth $2,808.77.
Couple arrested for battering each other
Suzanne Azinger, 46, and Paul Burch, 58, were arrested for allegedly battering each other at 6:34 p.m. Thursday at their home, in the 6300 block of Mulberry.
Burch told police Azinger threw a pizza cutter at him and chased him with a knife. Azinger said the fight started when she made a mean comment about Burch’s mother and he hit her. Both had visible injuries.
Azinger also was charged with felony intimidation for allegedly telling Burch that if she had a gun, she would kill him.
