BEVERLY SHORES – Police believe a 42-year-old Portage woman committed suicide at approximately 10 a.m. Tuesday on an old road within the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, just east of the intersection of East State Park Road and Beverly Drive.
According to a news release from the National Park Service, rangers from the park, along with officers from the Beverly Shores Police Department, the Porter County Sheriff’s Department and police from the town of Porter, responded to a report of a person with a gun in a vehicle on the road.
A hiker was walking along the road when they saw a pickup truck with the engine running parked along the road. As they approached the vehicle, they notice an individual slumped over with a gun in her hand in the driver’s seat.
The hiker then reported the incident to the Beverly Shores Police Department.
Officers observed the woman had what appeared to be a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Porter County Coroner’s Office and was transported to Porter Regional Hospital.
Park rangers notified the woman’s family. The coroner’s office determined an autopsy would not be performed.
