PORTAGE — City officials shut down the Travel Inn on U.S. 20 on Tuesday following continued fire code violations.

Building Commissioner Douglas Sweeney issued the order to vacate the hotel at 6101 Melton Road, based on the city’s unsafe building ordinance.

In a statement, Sweeney cited the following violations: nonfunctioning fire alarm, noncompliant fire doors and missing/nonmaintained fire extinguishers.

“The conditions of these fire safety components in the building create a hazard to the occupants that could result in serious injury or death. The building will be closed to occupancy until the fire code violations are addressed,” Sweeney said in the statement.

The order was directed to Sand Pointe Hospitality Inc.
