State lawmakers to appear at Chesterton public forum

Updated: February 26, 2013 6:30AM

For the second year in a row, the Porter County Retired Teachers Association is sponsoring a legislative forum featuring local lawmakers.

This year’s event, which will feature six elected officials, will begin with registration at 8:30 a.m. and the forum following from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the cafeteria of Bailly Elementary School, 800 S. Fifth St., Chesterton. The forum is open to the public.

Last year’s event was in Valparaiso but organizers decided to move it around the county this year, said forum coordinator Dennis Norman, adding the association is one of the only such groups sponsoring these forums in the state.

“There’s so much focus on education and what’s going on,” Norman said, adding the forum offers people the chance to meet with their legislators, particularly if they can’t get down to Indianapolis to do so.

Legislators expected to attend are Rep. Rick Niemeyer, R-Lowell; Rep. Ed Soliday, R-Valparaiso; Sen. Ed Charbonneau, R-Valparaiso; Sen. Karen Tallian, D-Portage; Rep. Chuck Moseley, D-Portage; and Rep. Scott Pelath, D-Michigan City. The moderator is former Rep. Ralph Ayres.

Last year’s event drew almost 100 people, Norman said, adding he’s hoping for more this year.

Under the forum’s format, the panel of legislators will address questions submitted to them during registration. Because elected officials didn’t have enough time to get to all the questions last year, those attending the forum are asked to only submit one question, Norman said.
